Navigation menus

Create and edit navigation menus for your header, footer and menu blocks. Menus are stored separately from the theme, so editing one updates the storefront immediately without creating a new theme version.

Where to find it: Designer › theme menu (store name + chevron) › Menus

Before you start

Menus are the navigation links in your header, footer or menu blocks. Your header, footer and any menu block point at a menu by its handle — a unique identifier. One edit to the menu updates every surface that uses it at once.

Menus do not have undo, version history or autosave. They save independently with a Save menu button, and they are not part of the theme, so editing one does not bump your theme's version.

Create a menu

Open the designer's theme menu (the store name and chevron in the top bar) and click Menus. A dialog opens titled "Navigation menus" with the text "The header, footer and menu blocks point at a menu by handle, so one edit here updates every surface that uses it. Menus are saved on their own — they do not create a new version of your theme."

At the bottom is a form to create a new menu. Enter:

  • Name (up to 160 characters, for example "Shop by category" or "Main menu")
  • Handle (up to 64 characters, lowercase with hyphens only, for example "main-menu" or "footer-links")

The handle is the identity the header or footer references. Once created, the handle cannot be changed — you can only edit the name.

Click Create menu to make it. The menu appears in the list and is ready to edit.

Good to know: Error messages tell you if a name or handle is invalid. Handles must be lowercase words joined by single hyphens.

Click a menu's row to open its editor. The editor shows:

  • A Back button to return to the list
  • The handle in grey (fixed, not editable)
  • A Name field (edit the menu's title)
  • The link tree — starting empty, "This menu has no links yet. Anything pointing at it renders no navigation until you add one."

Click Add link at the top to add the first link. An input appears with a Label field (what the customer sees, up to 120 characters, placeholder "Shop all"). Below it is a dropdown to choose where the link goes:

  • Home — the storefront homepage
  • All products — the full product catalogue page
  • Collection — a specific collection (you will type its handle)
  • Product — a specific product (you will type its handle)
  • Page — a custom page (you will type its handle)
  • Policy — choose from Refund policy / Shipping policy / Privacy policy / Terms of service
  • Search — the product search page
  • External URL — a full web address (starting with https://)

For each kind, fill in what it needs. A collection, product or page link takes a typed handle (for example "summer-sale", "linen-shirt", "about-us"). An external URL takes a full address (for example "https://example.com").

Once a link is set, click Add a link under this one to nest the next link — or Add link at the top level again to add a sibling.

Nesting and limits

A menu can nest 3 levels deep: a main link, a link under it, and a link under that. The third level is the deepest — you cannot nest further.

Each level can hold up to 50 links. If a level is full, the Add link button is disabled with the message "A menu level may hold at most 50 items."

Depth is tracked by indent: each Nest under the item above button indents a link one level; each Lift out one level button outdents it.

Each link row has Move up and Move down buttons. Use them to reorder links at the same level.

To move a link to a different depth, use Nest under the item above (right arrow button) or Lift out one level (left arrow button). These are disabled when the action would exceed the depth or item limits.

Drag-and-drop reordering is not available; use the move buttons.

Click a link's Label field to edit it (up to 120 characters). Click the dropdown below to change where the link goes.

Click Delete this link and anything nested under it to remove it and all its children in one action. There is no confirmation — Escape before deleting to cancel.

Save the menu

Make all your changes in the editor. At the bottom is a Save menu button. The menu is not written until you press it — all edits are held locally while you work.

Clicking Save menu sends the menu to the server. The button shows "Saving…" briefly; after success, the list appears with the updated menu. If save fails, an error message appears and the button stays enabled so you can try again.

Press Back to return to the list without saving — your edits are discarded.

Where are the menus used

On the menus list, each menu row shows where it is used:

  • "used by <label>, <label>, <label>" — one or more places in the storefront point at this menu
  • "not used yet" — no header, footer or menu block points at this menu (it still saves and is stored, just not visible)

A menu with no uses can be deleted without side effects.

Delete a menu

Click a menu row's Delete button (destructive red). Inline confirmation appears with the menu's name and two buttons — Cancel and a destructive Delete button.

If the menu is used by the header, footer or a menu block, a warning appears first: "N places still point at "<handle>". Deleting the menu does not change them — they will render no navigation until you point them somewhere else."

If the menu is not used, a note says: "Nothing points at this menu. Deleting it changes nothing on the storefront."

Deleting does not cascade — the header or footer still points at the now-missing menu handle, and the storefront shows a blank navigation. You must edit the header or footer to point at a different menu (a task outside this page).

Dangling menu references

If a menu block, header or footer points at a menu that no longer exists, a card appears under the pack name: "Links pointing at a missing menu". Each dangling handle is listed with a button that jumps the designer to that header, footer or menu block so you can change its menu reference.

Menus are not part of the theme document. Editing a menu:

  • Does not trigger the "Unsaved changes" badge
  • Does not add an undo step
  • Does not create a new theme version when you publish
  • Does not appear in version history

This is intentional — menus are navigation configuration, not design, and they live beside the theme for this reason.
