Theme packs and the Field theme

A theme pack is a complete starting point — every colour, font, button style and section layout baked in. Switch between packs to give your store a completely different look, or create a new theme from a pack to keep experimenting.

What is a theme pack

A theme pack is a complete design — colours, typefaces, button styles, spacing, corner radius and every setting. Instead of building a look from a blank canvas, a pack gives you a finished starting point with a consistent aesthetic.

Your store is on one theme pack at a time. Every section uses the pack's colour schemes, typography preset and layout rules. When you switch to a different pack, the same sections render in the new pack's style — without you having to edit each section's settings.

Packs are also the only way to create a brand new theme. "Start a new theme with <pack>" creates a separate theme using the pack's defaults and opens it, so you can design a variation without changing your live storefront.

The offered packs

The theme library offers two design starting points: Field and Gallery. Field is the default for new stores. Additional packs (Atelier, Bazaar, Bloom, Luxe, Mono, Plush) are retired — they ship with stores that were already on them, but new stores do not see them in the offered list.

When you open the theme pack section of the theme settings, you see cards for every pack your store can use — the two offered ones, plus any retired pack your store is currently on. Each card shows the pack name, a tagline, and a small preview. The active pack has a tick mark Current.

Switching packs

Click a different pack's card. If the switch is lossless — nothing in your store prevents the new pack from working — it switches immediately with the message "Switched to <pack>. Nothing was lost." and you can undo it in one step.

If the switch is not lossless, a dialog opens asking to confirm the switch, with the message: "Nothing has changed yet. This is what would happen to your store if you continue." Below it is a list of the impact — sections that the new pack cannot render are archived (moved to storage, see below), and sections' settings are reset to the new pack's defaults, losing any customisation you made to colour schemes, button sizes, etc.

At the bottom: "The whole switch is one step, so a single undo puts the previous pack back in one step."

Click Cancel to stay where you are, or the confirm button to apply the change. After switching: a message says the pack switched and undo will restore the previous pack in one step.

Starting a new theme with a pack

Each pack card also has a button. Clicking it creates a separate theme from scratch using that pack's defaults, then opens it in a new editor session. The theme you were editing stays intact on the theme library page as a draft you can return to and edit or publish later.

This is how you experiment: create a second theme to try a new look, keep the one the storefront is using, and decide which one you prefer before publishing.

The Field theme

Every new store gets the Field theme pack. Field is clean and white, modelled on Shopify's Horizon design. It works for any kind of shop — fashion, food, gifts, stationery, anything.

Field comes with:

  • Two colour schemes: Light (the default) and Dark
  • A header group (contains the store logo, navigation menu and search)
  • A footer group (contains footer links and a menu)
  • Core page templates: home page, product page, collection pages, shopping cart, checkout, order confirmation, customer login, error pages
  • Every core section type: banners, image galleries, product grids, testimonials, FAQs, contact forms, email signup, rich text, price tables and more
  • Button, input, card and badge styles designed to be neutral and legible
  • Layout proportions: a 1,440-pixel page width on desktop, responsive columns and touch-friendly spacing

When you edit theme settings on Field, you are editing Field's colour schemes, fonts and layout. When you switch away from Field, any sections built on Field-specific components are parked.

What happens to your sections and settings when you switch

When you switch packs, three things can happen:

Sections the new pack can render stay in place and switch their appearance to the new pack's style. A product grid always renders as a product grid, but its colours, button sizes and spacing change to match the new pack.

Sections the new pack cannot render are archived and moved to the theme pack section under "Archived sections" with a note showing what pack they came from and where they were on the old pack. You can restore them if you switch back to the old pack, or leave them archived.

Settings you changed — colour schemes you created, typography adjustments, layout customisations — all reset to the new pack's defaults. If you spent an hour tuning the button size and the header height, switching packs loses that work. That is why the dialog warns you first.

Good to know: Undo always works. If you switch packs and then realize you lost custom work, press Ctrl/Cmd+Z to go back.

Archived sections

Open the Theme pack section of theme settings. Below the offered pack cards is an "Archived sections" list — sections that the current pack cannot render (usually because you switched from a pack that shipped them).

Each row shows the section type, which old pack it came from, its position on that pack, and a Restore button. Clicking Restore brings it back to the same spot on the old template, and the page now shows a warning that the current pack cannot render it — but the section is no longer archived, and you can still see its content if you switch back to the old pack.

The Restore button is disabled when the current pack cannot render the section type. For example: "Field cannot render this section. Switch back to Atelier to use it again."

Empty archived sections: "Nothing archived. Sections a pack cannot render are kept here rather than deleted."
