Your store address and your own domain
Your store needs two things: a free address on omnikyo.com that always works, and the option to connect your own domain for more trust. Both serve your storefront at the same time.
Where to find it: Settings › Online store › Domains Who can do it: Owner or manager (the storefront.settings_edit permission)
Change your free store address
Your free address is yourslug.omnikyo.com. You can change it at any time.
Open Settings › Online store › Domains. Under Free address, select Change. A field appears with your current address. Edit the part before .omnikyo.com to what you want. Use only lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens (no spaces).
After 400 milliseconds, the system checks if that address is available. It will be taken if someone else on Omnikyo uses it, or if it is reserved (like www, api, or app). While checking, a line under the field says Checking availability….
When it is available, the line says yourslug.omnikyo.com is available. and a warning appears: "Links you shared with oldslug.omnikyo.com may stop working after you save." This is true — the old address is released immediately and becomes available to anyone else.
The address must be 3 to 63 characters. Save via the Save button on the page, or press Enter. The toast says Address changed.
Important: Your free address always stays live. You can use it instead of a custom domain for ever. Changing it does not affect any domain you have connected.
Connect your own domain
Connecting your own domain (like yourbrand.com or shop.yourbrand.com) takes 4 steps and usually 5–30 minutes.
First, you must own the domain. You buy it from any domain seller (like Namecheap, GoDaddy, or a local registrar). You don't paste any credentials into Omnikyo — you just copy DNS records into your registrar's control panel.
Step 1: Enter your domain
Under Use your own domain, select Connect domain. A form opens with a field Your domain (placeholder: yourbrand.com).
Type your domain. It can be:
- The main domain (apex):
yourbrand.com. Your storefront opens atwww.yourbrand.com, and the bare domain forwards there. - A subdomain:
shop.yourbrand.com. Your storefront opens there; yourbrand.com stays as it is.
Select Continue ("Connecting…" while busy). The system connects the domain. If it fails, it shows an error message like Domain "yourbrand.com" is already in use by "{store name}" (another store owns it).
Step 2: Copy DNS records
DNS records tell the internet where yourbrand.com lives. You add them at your domain registrar (the place you bought it).
A table appears with these columns: Type, Name, Value, Status.
For an apex domain (yourbrand.com), there are two record types:
- CNAME
www→stores.omnikyo.com(required). Your store opens at www.yourbrand.com. - CNAME
@→stores.omnikyo.com(optional, for apex forwarding). Note says "@ means the root of your domain" and a note about CNAME flattening. Skip it if your registrar doesn't support CNAME at the root; instead, create a redirect from yourbrand.com to www.yourbrand.com.
For a subdomain (shop.yourbrand.com), there is one CNAME:
- CNAME
shop→stores.omnikyo.com(required).
Two TXT records appear after a few seconds (while Cloudflare generates them):
_cf-custom-hostname.<host>— "Verifies you own {host}". This proves ownership._acme-challenge.<host>— "SSL certificate for {host}". This issues the free SSL certificate (the padlock in your browser).
Copy each record's value. Each cell has a copy button (Copy). Go to your domain registrar's DNS control panel and add the records exactly as shown.
Step-by-step help for common registrars (collapsible section):
Choose your registrar:
cPanel: In cPanel, go to Zone Editor. Add a CNAME for each name pointing to the value shown. The @ root symbol may not exist as an option; if you need the root, use the registrar's Redirects section instead.
Cloudflare: In Cloudflare, go to DNS. Add CNAME records. For the apex (root), Cloudflare allows CNAME via CNAME flattening — set the root to point to stores.omnikyo.com and Cloudflare flattens it. Ensure the Cloudflare proxy is DNS only (grey cloud icon), not Proxied (orange). Orange proxying blocks our SSL issuance.
Namecheap: In Namecheap, go to Advanced DNS. Add CNAME records. For the apex, if Namecheap forbids CNAME at the root, use a URL redirect option instead, set to 301 redirect https://yourbrand.com to https://www.yourbrand.com.
GoDaddy: In GoDaddy, go to DNS Management. Add CNAME records. For the apex, use the Forwarding option (301 redirect) to https://www.yourbrand.com.
Other registrars: Find your DNS control panel. The process is the same: add a CNAME record for each name → value pair. For the apex (if unsupported), use a redirect instead. Changes usually show up in 5–30 minutes.
Caution: Do not touch your MX records. Email on your domain keeps working through the whole process.
At the bottom of the records table: "{found} of {total} required records found · {n} with a wrong value — new records can take a few minutes to show up."
The system checks automatically every 15–30 seconds, backing off to 60 seconds. The status under each record row shows:
- Found — the record is there and correct.
- Wrong value — the record exists but points somewhere else. The line says "Points to {values} instead. Change the value to exactly {expected}."
- Not found yet — not there yet (you may have just added it).
- Not added (optional records only) — skipped; you don't need it.
- Couldn't check — the system couldn't look it up (try Check records or wait).
A button Check records lets you check right now instead of waiting for the automatic check.
When all required records are found, select the button to move to verification. If you want to remove this domain instead, select Remove domain. A dialog asks "Stop connecting yourbrand.com?" and confirms Remove domain.
Step 3: Verify and go live
The verification page shows progress items:
-
Point your domain to Omnikyo — Shows what the system found. While checking, says "Waiting for the CNAME record on {name} to show up." If found, says "{host} points to Omnikyo." If wrong, says "{host} points somewhere else. Check the CNAME record." Select Back to records to fix it.
-
Secure it with SSL — SSL (the padlock in your browser) is issued automatically once the TXT ownership record is found. The line says "Issuing your free SSL certificate (the padlock in the browser). Usually a few minutes." It starts once the TXT records show as Found.
-
Go live — Once both above are done, says "Your store opens at https://yourbrand.com". This can take 5–30 minutes total, sometimes longer if your registrar is slow.
While verifying, a button Check now checks immediately. Back to records lets you fix records. Remove domain cancels the connection.
If something breaks, an Error badge appears and says "We couldn't connect yourbrand.com" with an error message. A button Retry tries again. Select Remove domain to start over.
Remove a domain or view an active domain
Once a domain is active, a new row appears on the Domains page:
The domain name (e.g., yourbrand.com), with badges Connected and Primary, and a subtitle showing where the storefront opens.
A line says "SSL secured" (with a lock icon) and the connection date "Connected {date}". Buttons: Visit (opens the storefront in a new tab) and Remove (with a menu).
Selecting Remove shows a dialog: "Remove yourbrand.com?" — "Customers visiting {host} will stop reaching your store. Your free address {freeHost} keeps working." Select Remove domain to confirm. The toast says Domain removed — "Your store is back on its free address."
Your free address never stops working, even when a custom domain is active. Removing a custom domain does not affect the free address.
Fix a domain that won't connect
CNAME record not found
You have added the record at your registrar, but it is not showing up. Check records keeps saying "Not found yet".
This usually means the registrar has not published the change. Wait 5–30 minutes and select Check records again. Very rarely, it takes longer.
If it still doesn't appear after an hour, check that you copied the name and value exactly as shown. Domain names are case-insensitive, but copy them anyway. The value should be exactly stores.omnikyo.com (with no trailing dot unless your registrar requires it for all records).
If the record is definitely there at your registrar but Omnikyo still doesn't see it, the registrar may have a caching issue or misconfiguration — contact the registrar's support.
CNAME record has the wrong value
The system found the record, but it points somewhere else. The status line says "Points to {values} instead. Change the value to exactly {expected}."
Go back to your registrar's DNS panel and edit the record. Change the value to exactly what the table shows. Save. Select Check records. After a few minutes it should say Found.
A-record shadowing the CNAME (apex only)
You tried to set CNAME at the apex (yourbrand.com), but the status says "An A record points yourbrand.com to {ips}. Delete it, then add this CNAME."
This happens at registrars that don't allow CNAME at the apex — an A-record is in the way. Delete the A-record. If the apex truly needs an A-record (for email or another service on the root), ask your registrar about CNAME flattening, ALIAS, or ANAME records instead. Or use the redirect method: set up a 301 redirect from yourbrand.com to www.yourbrand.com at your registrar (look for a Redirect or URL Forward option).
TXT records still pending
You are on the verification page, but the system says "Waiting for the TXT records". The status shows "Not found yet".
TXT records (ownership and SSL) are generated automatically by the system and may take a minute to appear in the table. Once they appear, they are likely still new to the internet. Select Check now and wait a few minutes. DNS propagation can take up to 30 minutes.
Verification stuck
You are on the verification page, but nothing moves. It has been longer than an hour.
First, go back to the records page (Back to records) and verify that all required records (both CNAME and TXT) are marked Found. If any say "Not found yet" or "Wrong value", fix them and wait. If they are all Found, try Check now on the verification page. If that doesn't help, reload the page.
If the records are definitely correct and the issue persists, remove the domain (Remove domain) and reconnect it. The records you added at your registrar stay there and can be reused.
DNS check fails ("Couldn't check")
The system tried to check a record and got an error. The status says "Couldn't check".
This is a temporary glitch or the registrar is not responding. Select Check now and try again. If it happens repeatedly, verify at your registrar that the record was saved correctly.
Error status after verification
The verification page shows "We couldn't connect yourbrand.com" with an error message.
If the message says "DNS records not yet propagated. Please check again in a few minutes." — wait longer and select Retry. DNS propagation can be slow.
If it says something else, read it carefully. It might mention a specific record. Correct that record at your registrar and select Retry. Still stuck, remove the domain and reconnect.
Apex forwarding not working (apex only)
You set up the apex CNAME (yourbrand.com → stores.omnikyo.com), and domain connection succeeded, but when you visit yourbrand.com in your browser, you don't see your store.
This happens when the registrar doesn't support CNAME at the apex. The CNAME is there, but browsers don't follow it for web traffic. Set up a redirect at your registrar instead: create a 301 permanent redirect from yourbrand.com to https://www.yourbrand.com. Browsers will follow the redirect and land on your storefront.
Email stops working or MX record warning
You have MX records for email on yourbrand.com (or yourbrand.com forwards email). Adding the domain connection should not affect them.
If email stopped working after connecting a domain, check that your registrar's DNS panel still shows your MX records intact. Do not delete them. If they are there and email is still broken, contact your email provider — they may have rate-limited the domain or have a misconfiguration.
