Who can see and change products
Each product permission controls what a team member can do. The owner always bypasses restrictions.

Permission summary
| Permission | What it controls |
|---|---|
| page.products | View the All products page, editor, bulk editor, and Catalog tab. Required to do anything with products. |
| products.create | Create new products and add options/variants. |
| products.edit | Edit product fields, upload photos, create/edit variants, adjust stock per-location, save complementary picks, manage custom fields. |
| products.delete | Delete products and variants. |
| products.variants_manage | Save the option/variant structure (add/remove/rename options and values). Needed when changing a simple product to have variants, or vice versa. |
| products.view | Read product data that is not on the main list or editor — per-location stock levels, complementary product picks, and historical data. Granted automatically with products.edit. |
| page.inventory | View the Stock movements section in a product's details modal. Does not affect the Inventory page itself. |
Typical roles
Owner has every product permission and bypasses all restrictions.
Manager role typically holds products.create, products.edit, products.delete, and products.variants_manage — full control except they cannot see read-only movement history.
Staff role may have only products.view and products.edit — they can edit existing products but not create or delete them.
View the products list and editor
Both require page.products.
- The All products list requires only page.products.
- Opening a product to view or edit requires page.products.
- The Catalog tab (categories, collections, metafields) also requires page.products.
Without this permission, the Products and Catalog menu items are hidden, and direct URLs redirect to the Dashboard.
Create a new product
Creating requires products.create.
- The Add product button is hidden without this permission.
- Upgrading a simple product to have variants, or vice versa, requires products.variants_manage in addition to create.
With a write-blocked (trial or overdue) subscription, the Add product button is blocked with an upgrade prompt even if the permission is granted.
Edit a product
Editing requires products.edit.
- Changing any product field — name, description, price, cost, etc. — requires products.edit.
- Uploading or reordering photos requires products.edit.
- Creating, editing, or deleting variants (the rows under Options) requires products.edit.
- Changing the option/variant structure (adding/removing option names or values) requires products.variants_manage.
- Adjusting stock per-location (on the editor or Inventory page) requires products.edit.
- Adding or removing complementary product picks requires products.edit.
- Creating or editing custom fields on the product requires products.edit.
With a write-blocked subscription, every edit is rejected server-side, even if the permission is granted.
Delete a product
Deleting requires products.delete.
- The Delete button on the list row and in the product editor overflow menu is hidden without this permission.
- Bulk delete (selecting rows and clicking Delete) requires products.delete.
A product that is part of an order cannot be deleted — it must be archived instead.
Change the variant structure
Saving the option/variant structure requires products.variants_manage.
- When you add, remove, or rename option names (Size, Color, etc.), the change requires products.variants_manage.
- When you change a simple product to have variants, or archived variants back to active, saving requires both products.variants_manage and products.create (for new) or products.edit (for existing).
Read product details not on the list
Reading movement history, per-location stock levels, or complementary product picks requires products.view.
- The Stock movements section in the product details modal (row click) shows only if you have page.inventory.
- Adjusting stock on the editor or Inventory page requires products.edit, not just view.
Visibility per plan
Write-blocked subscriptions (expired trial, overdue payment) prevent all product creation and editing, even if permissions are granted. The affected buttons and forms show an upgrade prompt.
The Inventory page and Catalog tabs are not gated by subscription — you can view and move stock on an expired plan, but cannot create new products or edit them.
