Options and variants

A product can exist in different combinations of sizes, colors, or materials. Each combination is a variant, with its own price, stock and SKU.

Where to find it: Sidebar › Products › open a product → Options card Who can do it: Anyone with the Edit products and Manage variants permissions (owners and allowed managers).

What is an option and a variant

An option is a choice you offer for the product — Size, Color, Material, Style, or any other. Each option has values: for Size, the values might be S, M, L, XL.

A variant is a specific combination. If you sell a Polo in Size and Color, with values (S, M, L) and (Black, Navy), you have 6 variants:

  • Polo - S / Black
  • Polo - S / Navy
  • Polo - M / Black
  • Polo - M / Navy
  • Polo - L / Black
  • Polo - L / Navy

Each variant has its own price, stock, cost, SKU and photo.

When to use options

Create variants when the customer needs to choose before buying. Use them for:

  • Size (clothing, shoes)
  • Color (fabric, paint, flowers)
  • Material or Fabric (cotton, linen, wool)
  • Style (cut, pattern, design)

Do not create variants for:

  • Different products sold separately (create separate products instead)
  • Things you track internally but the customer does not choose (like storage colour — use the product title or custom fields instead)

One version vs. has options

When creating or editing a product, you choose at the start: One version or Has options.

One version — the product has a single price, single stock count, single SKU. Use this for products with no choices.

Has options — the product will have variants. You add options and their values; every combination becomes a row.

You can switch a product back to one version, but this deletes all variants. The system warns you: "Saving as one version removes this product's variants."

Add and manage options

In the Options card, you can add up to 3 options.

  1. Type an option name: Size, Color, Material, Style, or any custom name.
  2. As you type, suggestion chips appear. Tap one to pick it, or type your own name and press Enter.
  3. Below the name field, add values for that option. Type each value and press Enter, Comma, or Tab to add it. Values are automatically deduplicated (if you type "black" and "Black", only one is kept).
  4. To add values faster, preset value chips appear for common options:
    • Size offers S M L XL XXL or 28 30 32 34 36 38 (common clothing sizes)
    • Color offers Black White Navy Grey Beige Maroon Olive
    • Material/Fabric offers Cotton Linen Polyester Wool Denim
    • Tap Add all or pick individual + value chips
  5. To reorder values within an option, drag a value chip by its grip handle.
  6. To remove a value, tap the ✕ on its chip.
  7. To remove an entire option, tap the ✕ button in the option card. You can only remove an option if you have more than one (the last one cannot be deleted).
  8. To add a third option, scroll down and tap Add another option.

The system generates a variant row for every combination of your option values automatically. Editing or removing values updates the variants to match.

Set prices, costs, and stock per variant

Once you have options, each variant appears as a row with its own Price, Compare-at price, Cost, Stock and SKU.

Desktop: variant rows appear in a table. Click into a cell to edit; press Tab to move to the next field.

Phone: each variant is a collapsible card. Tap the summary line to expand and see all fields.

Price and Cost are money fields; Stock is a whole number ≥ 0. Leave Compare-at price empty unless you want to show a discount.

The SKU is auto-filled from the variant values — for example, "Polo S Navy" becomes "PSNA" — but you can edit it. SKUs must be unique across your product catalog.

Set the same price or cost on many variants at once

At the top of the variant list, tap Edit all at once (or Edit N selected if you have ticked checkboxes).

A panel appears with fields for Price, Compare at, Cost and Stock (single-location only). Fill any field you want to change, leave others empty to keep each variant's own value, then tap Apply. Every variant receives the new value.

To set the same price on only some variants, tick their checkboxes first, then Edit N selected.

Select variants by option value

Below the variant list header is a Select row with one chip per option value. Tap a chip to select every variant that has that value. Tap Clear to deselect all. This is useful before bulk-editing or deleting specific variants.

For example, with Size (S, M, L) and Color (Black, Navy), tap the Black chip to select all Black variants, then Edit 3 selected to change their price in one go.

Reorder variants

Drag a variant row by the grip handle (⋮⋮) on the left to move it up or down. The new order is saved as variant_position when you save the product.

Change the photo for a variant

Each variant can have its own photo. The first column of the variant table/card shows a thumbnail. Tap the thumbnail to open the Photo for this variant picker. Choose an existing photo from your library or upload a new one. Leave it blank to use the product's cover photo.

Switch a product back to one version

If you change your mind and want a single price and stock count, you can revert.

At the top of the variant list, change Has options back to One version. A warning appears: "Saving as one version removes this product's variants."

All variants are deleted. The new single-version product keeps the price and stock from the first (or last) variant — check before saving.

SKU generation for variants

When you create a new variant combination, its SKU is generated from the product name and the variant option values.

Example: Product "Maroon knit polo", options Size/Color, variant values "L" and "Maroon" → SKU "MRPO-L-MR" (or similar).

Size values are automatically converted to codes: "Small" → "S", "Extra Large" → "XL". If a variant SKU already exists, the system adds "-2", "-3", etc. until it is unique.

You can override the auto SKU by editing the field. Once you edit it, the auto-generation stops and the field will not update again if you change the variant values.

What the API and storefront see

Your storefront shows option groups and values to the customer. When they buy, they choose one variant. The variant's price, stock and SKU are what the order, Inventory and Reports see.

All your variants of a product share the title and description. The cover photo shows by default; variants with their own photo show that instead.

Limits and rules

  • Maximum 3 options per product
  • No limit on values per option (but very long lists confuse customers)
  • Variants can be database-intensive if you have 3 options with many values each (e.g. 10 × 10 × 10 = 1,000 variants). The system handles this but your Inventory page may be slow to load.
  • Switching a product back to one version deletes all variants. This cannot be undone except by reloading the page without saving.
