SKUs, slugs and barcodes

Every product and variant has a SKU (stock keeping unit) — a unique code you use to track stock and identify items.

What is a SKU

A SKU is a short alphanumeric code (letters A–Z, numbers 0–9, hyphens, up to 24 characters) that you use to identify a product or variant in your system, orders and invoices. It is displayed uppercase.

Example SKUs:

  • MRPO — Maroon polo
  • MRPO-L-MR — Maroon polo, size Large, Maroon color
  • SOX-WH-3PK — Socks, White, 3-pack

Auto-generated SKUs

When you create a product or variant without entering a SKU, the system generates one automatically.

Simple products: The system uses the product name. Stop words (a, an, and, by, for, in, of, or, the, to, with) are dropped. Then:

  • One word → first 6 characters
  • Two or more words → first 2 letters of the first 3 words

Example:

  • "Red socks" → RASO (Re + So)
  • "Classic knit polo" → CLKP (Cl + Kn + Po)
  • "Shirt" → SHIRT

Variants: The SKU is the product base (from the name) plus abbreviated option values. Size names are converted to standard codes:

  • Small → S, Medium → M, Large → L, XL → XL, Extra Large → XL
  • Any two-letter or four-letter code stays as-is
  • All other values use the first 2 letters

Example:

  • Product "Polo" with variant Size=M Color=Navy → PO-M-NA
  • Product "Shirt" with variant Size=XL Material=Cotton → SHIRT-XL-CO

If any generated SKU is already in use, the system appends -2, -3, etc. until it finds a free one.

Override a SKU

Click into the SKU field and type your own code (letters, numbers, hyphens only; no spaces). The field forces uppercase. Once you edit a SKU manually, the auto-generation stops — changing the product name or variant values will not change your custom SKU.

To go back to auto-generation, clear the field and save the product.

Duplicate SKU error

If you enter a SKU that is already used by another product or variant, you get an error: SKU "X" already exists. Please use a unique SKU.

SKUs must be unique across your entire product catalog. Edit the SKU to a different value and save again.

SKU limits and characters

  • Maximum 24 characters (including hyphens)
  • Allowed characters: A–Z, 0–9, hyphen (-)
  • Uppercase: The field enforces uppercase; lowercase is converted

All SKUs are uppercased in your system, orders and reports.

What is a slug

A slug is the part of the product's web address that comes after /products/. For example, the product "Maroon knit polo" might have the slug maroon-knit-polo, and its public link is yourstore.com/products/maroon-knit-polo.

The slug is generated once when you first create the product, from the product title. If you later rename the product, the slug does not change. This is intentional — it prevents old links from breaking.

Example:

  • Create "Red socks" → slug is red-socks
  • Rename to "Crimson socks" → slug stays red-socks (the link does not break for customers who bookmarked it)

If two products end up with the same slug (because you created Product A, renamed it, created Product B with the original name), the second one gets an error: "A product with the same URL slug already exists. Please try a different product or variant name."

Barcode field

The Barcode field stores the product's barcode code (ISBN, UPC, GTIN, EAN, etc.) if the product has one. This is optional and is not shown to customers — it is for your records and integrations.

Leave it blank if the product does not have a barcode. If you import orders from external systems, the barcode may be used to match products.

Multi-variant SKUs and variant selection

On the products list, variant products show N variants in the inventory column. Each variant has its own SKU; they are not shown in the list, but you can see them in the editor.

When staff create an order and select a variant product, they choose the specific variant (by option values), and that variant's SKU, price and stock are used.
