Product problems and fixes

Common product problems and how to fix them.

বাংলায়: পণ্য নিয়ে সাধারণ সমস্যা এবং তাদের সমাধান।

Can't delete a product

What you see: When you click Delete in the list or editor, you get a confirmation dialog. You confirm, but the product stays there and a toast shows: "Cannot delete this product as it is part of an existing order. Please archive the product instead."

Why it happens: Once a product is ordered, it becomes a historical record. The order retains the product details at the time the sale happened, and deleting would lose that information.

How to fix it:

  1. Go back to the products list and open the product.
  2. Click the status switch at the top (or use the selection bar's Set status → Archive).
  3. Choose Archive.
  4. The product is hidden from your store and order forms but stays in your records.

Your past orders keep their copy of what the product was — archiving does not affect them.

SKU already exists

What you see: When you save, you see the error: "SKU "X" already exists. Please use a unique SKU."

Why it happens: SKUs must be unique within your business. Two products cannot have the same SKU.

How to fix it:

  1. Check the SKU field to see what you typed.
  2. Search the product list for that SKU (use the Search box).
  3. If another product has it, change the SKU on one of them. SKUs auto-generate from the product name; edit the SKU field to override it.
  4. Save again.

If you cannot find the other product, it may be archived. Search for the SKU; if it matches something, that's the conflict — edit either product's SKU to be unique.

A product with the same URL slug already exists

What you see: When you create a product and give it a name, you see: "A product with the same URL slug already exists. Please try a different product or variant name."

Why it happens: The URL slug is generated from the product name at create time. If another product's name generates the same slug (e.g., "Polo" and "polo", or "Black Shirt" and "black-shirt"), the slug collision is rejected.

How to fix it:

  1. Change the product's name slightly (e.g., "Black Shirt – Classic" instead of "Black Shirt").
  2. The slug is generated from the new name.
  3. Save the product.

The slug is never regenerated after creation — it stays even if you rename the product later.

Save incomplete: Saved product, but [field] failed

What you see: The product is created or updated, but a toast says: "Save incomplete — Saved product, but {variants|custom fields|complementary products|stock by location} failed: {detail}".

Why it happens: The core product data saved, but a secondary step failed — uploading photos, setting variant details, metafield data, complementary picks, or per-location stock.

How to fix it:

  1. The core product is saved with its name, description and price. Check the main editor to confirm.
  2. Look at the failed section (variants, custom fields, etc.) and fix the problem:
    • Variants: Clear any invalid values (e.g., missing prices) and save again.
    • Custom fields: Fill in any required fields and save.
    • Complementary products: Try the save again — the feature may have had a temporary issue.
    • Stock by location: Edit each location's quantity to be whole numbers ≥ 0 and save.
  3. Save the product again once you fix the issue.

The partial save means you did not lose the core product.

Product not found

What you see: You try to open a product, and you see: "Product not found" with a back button.

Why it happens: The product was deleted (or you do not have permission to view it), or the product ID in the URL does not exist.

How to fix it:

  1. Click Back to products to return to the list.
  2. Search for the product by name or SKU.
  3. If you find it, open it again.
  4. If you cannot find it, it was deleted. You cannot recover a deleted product, but your orders still have a record of what it was.

Couldn't load this product

What you see: When you open the product editor or details modal, you see: "Couldn't load this product" with Back to products and Try again buttons.

Why it happens: The server could not fetch the product data (network issue, temporary outage, or permission problem).

How to fix it:

  1. Click Try again to reload.
  2. If it still fails, refresh the page (Ctrl/⌘ R or F5).
  3. If it still fails, check your internet connection.
  4. If it still fails, contact support.

Variant rows not appearing

What you see: You created a product with options (Size, Color, etc.), but the variant rows below the options are empty or not showing all combinations.

Why it happens: The variant rows auto-generate from your option values. If you added values but the rows did not appear, a background refresh may be still loading.

How to fix it:

  1. Make sure you have confirmed all option values by pressing Enter or blurring the input field.
  2. Wait a moment for the auto-generation.
  3. If rows still don't appear, scroll down to see if they are below the visible area.
  4. If a variant row is missing, check that the option value is still there — deleting a value deletes all variants with that value.
  5. Refresh the page if the rows still don't appear.

Photo upload rejected

What you see: When you drag a photo to the upload area or click Upload, you get a toast: "N file(s) not added" with a reason.

Why it happens: Photos must be JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG or AVIF format, and ≤ 20 MB each.

How to fix it:

  1. Check the file format. If it is not one of the supported types (JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG, AVIF), convert it first in an image editor.
  2. If the file is too large (over 20 MB), compress it — most online compressors can reduce a photo to under 5 MB.
  3. Try uploading again.
  4. If it still fails, try a different photo or check that the file is not corrupted.

If you see "Upload in progress — please wait", don't close the page — let it complete.

Alt text field does not appear on a photo

What you see: You open a photo to edit its alt text, but the field is missing.

Why it happens: The alt text editor may not have loaded yet, or you are in a read-only context (viewing an archived product).

How to fix it:

  1. Close the modal and try again.
  2. If the product is archived, unarchive it or ask someone with products.edit permission to edit the alt text.

Still stuck?

If none of the above fixes your problem, contact support.
